WAVTEQ contributes to the new Financial Times fDi Report 2019

fDi Intelligence, a service from the Financial Times, has just released its fDi Report 2019, the most authoritative publication on global trends in greenfield foreign direct investment. The fDi Report 2019 reveals that greenfield capital investment increased by 42% in 2018 to $663bn, while the number of FDI projects increased by 7% and job creation by 25%.

Dr Henry Loewendahl, CEO of WAVTEQ, provides an expert opinion piece in the fDi Report on how to interpret FDI statistics. He covers key topics including the differences between official FDI flows data and the data published by IPAs and the Financial Times and why the US had huge negative FDI outflows in 2018 and Ireland negative inward FDI in 2018 while FDI flows to the UK grew strongly despite Brexit? Dr Henry Loewendahl's contribution to The fDi Report follows his recent invitation by the UK House of Commons Select Committee to give evidence on the FDI performance of the UK.

Key FDI trends highlighted in The fDi Report include:

  • China replaces the US as the highest ranked country for FDI by capital investment
  • Western Europe was the leading source region for FDI, accounting for 44% of all FDI globally (although we would note this includes intra-European FDI)
  • Capital investment into India grew by 120% to $54.3bn
  • Capital investment from companies setting up headquarters operations in the UK halved from 2015-2018
  • Brazil and Argentina both had very strong FDI results in 2018, with greenfield FDI in each country increasing by 77% and 78%, respectively
